Fine dining, wherever you’re hosting in San Francisco.

Private Chef San Francisco

It starts with whatever the Ferry Building market had that morning. CHEFIN is a private chef service connecting you with vetted chefs across San Francisco and the Bay Area, and the menu gets built from there — in a Noe Valley Victorian, a Mission flat, a place down the Peninsula, or a SoMa office. Your chef plans the menu, sources premium ingredients, cooks on-site and cleans up before leaving. A tasting menu, a dinner party in a narrow city kitchen, or a night in for people who eat out constantly and want one that beats it. You pick the dining style. We match you with the chef whose cooking suits your menu, your dietary needs and the occasion, then you and your chef shape it together. A concierge stays with it from the first message to the last plate cleared.

Cocktail and canapé packages start from $65 a head, three-course fine dining from $195, tax included. A private chef for one evening or a personal chef on a regular basis: either way, it starts with the same call. Finding a good chef in San Francisco is the easy part. What sits behind them is the rest of it.

Amazing. Great food. Chat. Relax & have fun. No stress!

2. Platform Chef matches

Once a booking is reserved, the CHEFIN algorithm will take your preferences & match these with available chefs in your area.

3. Design a menu together

You will be able to tailor the chef’s services to your needs. Chefs LOVE to create dishes, every menu they construct is exclusive.

4. Sit back and enjoy!

what customers say

How much does a private chef cost in San Francisco?

You pay per person, and the rate depends on the dining style and how many are coming. Cocktail and canapé packages start from $65 a head, family-style share plates at $165, three-course plated fine dining at $195, and five-course at $245. All inclusive of tax, with nothing added at checkout. There is no call-out fee, no ingredient surcharge and no cleaning charge either. The number you are quoted covers the chef, the premium ingredients, the cooking, the service, and the kitchen left the way they found it.

Each package page shows its current rate. For an exact figure on your date and number of guests, ask the concierge. Prices can shift over the holidays and for last-minute booking.

Frequently Asked Questions

How much does a personal chef cost in San Francisco?

A personal chef is a recurring arrangement rather than a one-off booking, so it is priced weekly or fortnightly rather than per person. What it costs depends on how many people you are feeding, how many meals a week, and how much variety you want. Tell the concierge the shape of it and we will quote the actual plan. For a one-off event, CHEFIN prices per person from $65 for canapés and $195 for three-course fine dining.

How can I hire a private chef in the Bay Area?

Through CHEFIN. Tell the concierge your date, where you are in the Bay Area, how many are coming and what the evening is for, and we come back with chefs who are free and whose cooking suits it. Our chefs cover San Francisco, the Peninsula, the East Bay, Marin and out to wine country. Every chef has passed background checks and a tasting before you see them.

Are private chefs worth it?

For an occasion, usually. The comparison is not against cooking at home but against a restaurant: a comparable tasting menu for eight in San Francisco, plus wine, tax, tip and transport, often costs more than a private chef at your own table — and you are not booking a month out or watching a reservation clock. For routine weeknight cooking it is the wrong service; that is a personal chef arrangement.

What is the difference between a private chef and a personal chef?

A private chef is booked for one occasion and cooks and serves on the day. A personal chef visits regularly to prepare meals for a household through the week. CHEFIN provides both in the Bay Area, and here the second is asked for as often as the first. A third arrangement, employing a full-time chef on salary, runs well into six figures a year and is a different service again.

Can a private chef in San Francisco cook Indian, Chinese or other regional cuisines?

Yes, and properly. San Francisco has genuine depth in Cantonese, Indian, Vietnamese, Japanese and Mexican cooking, and our chefs reflect that rather than treating it as a specialty menu. Tell the concierge what the table wants and we match you with a chef whose training fits, rather than one improvising outside their range.

Is there a maximum number of guests for a private chef in San Francisco?

There is no hard limit, but the format changes with the numbers. Up to about fifteen guests suits a seated, plated dinner with one chef. Beyond that we usually suggest family-style share plates or canapés, and add a second chef or wait staff. Flats and Victorians here are often tighter than the guest list suggests, so tell the concierge about the space too.

Does the private chef cook at my house?

Yes. Your chef cooks on site in your kitchen. They work with the equipment that is there, bring premium ingredients bought fresh for your menu, and cook and plate everything on the night. San Francisco galley kitchens are a known quantity for our chefs — tell the concierge what you have and the menu is planned around it.

Do private chefs clean up after cooking?

Yes. Every CHEFIN booking includes full cleanup of the kitchen and dining area, and your chef leaves the space as they found it. Cleanup is part of the per-person price, not charged separately.

Can a private chef accommodate dietary restrictions?

Yes. Dietary needs are collected at booking and the menu is built around them: gluten-free, dairy free, vegetarian, vegan, keto, halal, kosher-style and any specific allergy. Send them all through at once and your chef designs a single menu that caters to the whole table.

Private dining in San Francisco, on your terms

San Francisco has some of the best private dining rooms in the country, and almost all of them come with a minimum spend, a set menu and a table you have to leave by nine. A private chef gives you the same polish without any of that: a menu built for your guests, plated and served, in a space that is yours for the evening.

It suits the gatherings restaurants handle badly. A table of fourteen that wants to hear each other. A client dinner where the conversation matters more than the room. A birthday that should not run on a reservation clock. And in a city where a good table means booking a month out, hosting at home stops being the compromise.

It scales both ways: a tasting menu for two in Pacific Heights, a long shared table in the Mission, canapés and a bar for a full flat in Hayes Valley. You set the guest list and the brief; the chef builds the menu and runs the evening. It is a restaurant-quality dining experience at your own table, in-home and on your schedule.

Looking for a personal chef in San Francisco?

A private chef is booked for one occasion. A personal chef comes regularly — usually weekly — to cook and stock meals for the week ahead. CHEFIN provides both in San Francisco, and in this market the second is asked for as often as the first.

The arrangement is different: a weekly or fortnightly visit rather than a per-event booking, priced accordingly, built around how your household actually eats. Dietary needs, training goals, kids who will only eat four things — all of it gets designed in rather than worked around. Tell the concierge how often you want a chef and for how many people, and we will quote the right model rather than the wrong one.

  • Corporate hosting: client dinners and team evenings, from SoMa to a Presidio Heights home.
  • Wine dinners: bottles from Napa and Sonoma, paired properly at your own table.

Cooking in San Francisco: Californian produce, Pacific seafood and wine country

San Francisco is where Californian cooking was defined, and its chefs still work that way: produce first, technique second, nothing on the plate that does not need to be there. Beyond that our chefs cover more than twenty cuisines — the city’s Cantonese, Vietnamese, Indian, Mexican and Japanese cooking is not a side note, it is the mainstream — and several came out of Bay Area restaurant kitchens.

The produce is the best in the country and everyone knows it.

Ferry Plaza and the Alemany market, Dungeness crab from November, Half Moon Bay seafood, Point Reyes cheese, Marin oysters, and Central Valley stone fruit through summer. Our chefs buy from the suppliers and growers they have chosen themselves, shopping close to the day rather than working from a fixed list.
Wine pairings come from an hour north.

Napa Cabernet, Sonoma Pinot and Chardonnay, Russian River and Anderson Valley. A San Francisco chef pairing locally has more range to work with than a chef almost anywhere else.
The kitchens are small and the views are not.

San Francisco runs on Victorians with narrow galley kitchens, Edwardian flats, new-build condos with an island and a bridge view, and Peninsula homes built for entertaining. A Noe Valley galley and an Atherton kitchen are two different evenings to cook. Tell your concierge which one you have.
